BellSouth asks Georgia Public Service Commission to Reverse Price Ruling

Jul. 8--BellSouth has asked the Georgia Public Service Commission to reconsider its order to cut the wholesale prices that BellSouth charges local phone service competitors to lease part of its network.
If the PSC does not, BellSouth indicated in its filing Monday that it may seek to have the June 24 order overturned in court.
BellSouth has said the rates ordered by the PSC are not lawful and give its competitors an unfair advantage in the marketplace.
State regulators argue the lowering of the wholesale prices will help preserve a competitive market for local phone service, particularly in metro Atlanta.
The PSC lowered the wholesale price of the bundle of elements in most of metro Atlanta to $10.22 a month from $12.59. That's the price BellSouth would charge rivals, such as AT&T and MCI, to provide service to a customer.
Rates were raised elsewhere in the state.
New federal rules give state regulators the final say over how much dominant phone companies can charge rivals to lease parts of their phone networks.
