Sprint Nextel Marks America Recycles Day By Urging New Yorkers to Recycle Wireless Phones
Posted on: Wednesday, 15 November 2006, 09:00 CST
In honor of America Recycles Day, Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is encouraging people to recycle their old wireless phones and accessories, such as batteries, by picking up a free postage-paid recycling envelope at Sprint retail stores throughout New York State.
Beginning Dec. 1, 2006, a New York City law will take effect requiring retailers of rechargeable batteries to take back these items for recycling. Additionally, on Jan. 1, 2007, a New York State law will require wireless retailers to accept cell phones for recycling. Sprint Project ConnectSM, being one of the first nationwide wireless recycling programs, already meets the standards that will be imposed by both laws.
Since 2001, Sprint Nextel has collected nearly seven million wireless devices that otherwise would have ended up in landfills. "Wireless recycling has long been an integral part of Sprint Nextel's environmental commitment," said Maureen Link, Sprint Nextel regional vice president. "We've already kept millions of phones out of the waste stream and we remain dedicated to collecting many more."
Sprint Project Connect accepts all wireless phones and accessories regardless of make, model, carrier or condition. To make recycling convenient for all, donations are accepted by mail using free postage-paid recycling envelopes available at Sprint stores nationwide. Free shipping labels are also available for printing online at www.sprint.com/projectconnect.
