QinetiQ Group Honoured With 2006 Frost & Sullivan Growth Strategy Leadership Award for Successful Commercialisation of Defence Technologies

Posted on: Friday, 17 November 2006, 06:00 CST

LONDON, November 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2006 Frost and Sullivan Growth Strategy Leadership Award in the European aerospace and defence industry is conferred on the QinetiQ Group, (formerly DERA, the UK Ministry of Defence's research arm) for emerging as a European leader in the development and commercialisation of defence technologies.

"At a time when many companies are looking to withdraw from research and early technology incubation to concentrate on product development, QinetiQ's knowledge-base and extensive experience in defence technology incubation is expected to position the company as an indispensable partner," explains Frost & Sullivan Analyst Christopher M. Dabrowski.

With mission critical expertise and a long-track record with UK MOD, QinetiQ is established as partner-of-choice for programmes requiring sophisticated project management and systems integration skills.

QinetiQ's revenue diversification strategy has centred on its advanced technology base. It continues to focus firmly on its core defence business, where it has increased its penetration of the defence technology supply chain as a partner or subcontractor to other primes. In addition, it is selectively commercialising niche technologies such as the Tarsier runway debris detection system and the Quintel multiple 3G mobile antenna sharing technology.

"QinetiQ has also pursued a number of highly accretive strategic acquisitions, both in the US and Europe, to support its diversification and growth strategies," adds Mr. Dabrowski. "This will benefit QinetiQ, as reasonably stable government defence R&D expenditure provides a strong research base from which to commercialise selected technologies."

The company's organisational structure, centred on two UK business units - Defence & Technology and Security & Dual Use - and QinetiQ North America, has promoted a culture of innovation. For instance, at an internal level, QinetiQ's Security & Dual Use leverages its technology base into commercial markets, while at the external level; it operates as a market-facing entity wherein it aligns the company alongside key growth markets.

"Reinforcing the company's technological innovation have been initiatives ranging from the Green Warrior 2030 programme to research into fuel cell technology and SCRAMJET propulsion in Australia that have put QinetiQ at the forefront of sustainable power solutions," says Mr. Dabrowski. "Similarly, the strategic acquisition of US companies in the fast-growing market areas of technology, systems engineering and IT is leveraging the company's capabilities into the US market, while the Verhaert Space acquisition achieves the same purpose in the niche area of low-cost European space missions."

Developing such technologies with a crossover mindset has provided QinetiQ with considerable advantages over civilian suppliers in terms of scoping capability requirements, robustness and security. In fact, QinetiQ is uniquely positioned as the only company that can build on its extensive history as a top-flight government laboratory organisation to support further technology innovation.

"Simply put, the main driver of QinetiQ's success is its technological competencies confirmed by its success in recent UK DPA's contract awards including the C4ISTAR integration technology study, the ALBION thermal viewer and Team Complex Weapons," comments Mr. Dabrowski. "While not a manufacturer in its own right, QinetiQ possesses the intellectual resources for technology development as well as implementation, making it a natural partner for such high-value-added complex networking and information technologies integration projects."
