GarrettCom Offers Industrial Ethernet Users the Same Web Access Security Used By World's Financial Institutions

FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- GarrettCom(TM) Inc. offers plant managers and industrial engineers the same web access security technology that handles the world's financial transactions via the web through the latest release of its MNS-6K Ethernet management software. MNS-6K's Secure Web Management functionality provides authentication and encryption to assure that web connections with the factory are secure.
"In a post-9/11 world, it would be irresponsible for vendors to present web management for industrial applications without providing strong protection against misuse," said Frank Madren, president, GarrettCom. "A password is not enough. Market conditions and technology are now coming together to provide viable secure web management for industrial applications. This release of MNS-6K is the first step in a comprehensive security program that we will roll out over the coming year," he continued.
According to Madren, it is the switch manufacturer's duty to provide access management to ensure that Web access via an Ethernet switch is secure. Using SNMP and SSL/TSL, MNS-6K can provide authentication, ensuring that a user is who he/she claims to be, and encryption to ensure that the password-protected access to an application cannot be compromised by the simple mechanism of highjacking an unencoded password via "snooper" software or hacking it as it crosses the Internet.
Industrial users have been reluctant to take advantage of web-based system management applications. While managing an Industrial Ethernet Switch over the Internet could provide significant financial savings, along with convenience and simplicity, security threats have given most managers pause. If a trusted employee can get in, what is to stop the disgruntled employee, the hacker, or the terrorist? GarrettCom is the first edge switch manufacturer in the industrial marketplace to offer secure access solutions.
Release 3.0 of the company's MNS-6K Ethernet management software includes the following Secure Web Management capabilities: SNMPv3, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) to enable the embedded Web server in 6K Switches to handle secure HTTP (HTTPS), the highest level of access security available. No longer is industrial LAN management confined to tethered access using a console plugged into a switch or a Telnet session; engineers and service technicians can manage an Ethernet switch over the Internet from any location using a browser.
"Passwords are like keys to the door of your house; locks really keep out only the honest people. You need a burglar alarm system, such as SSL, to provide the level of security necessary to operate in the sensitive post-9/11 environment -- especially in public utilities and other critical operations considered targets of terrorist organizations," Madren said.
"HV Power provides technologies that enhance network security within the New Zealand power industry and industrial market. GarrettCom's secure web management extensions to its MNS network management software provides the capabilities we have been looking for to enable our industrial customers to implement the convenience of web access," said Mike Strong, Services Manager, HV Power.
Secure Web Management is being shown at the ITE Show in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 2-3. Security in traffic systems LANs is key to acceptance and development in governmental and industrial applications.
