Prism's SourceESB.Com Site Adds Industry-First RoHS Search Capabilities for Electronic Component Purchasing

Posted on: Monday, 11 December 2006, 12:00 CST

Prism Business Media's SourceESB.com Web site today announced the addition of industry-first RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substance) search capabilities for its electronic component database service. SourceESB.com is the electronics industry's premier Web sourcing tool for purchasing and procurement professionals, providing comprehensive distributor and vendor contact information for more than 8,000 manufacturers of electronic components. Using SourceESB.com, buyers can now quickly identify parts and components that comply with RoHS requirements enacted earlier this year.

SourceESB.com's comprehensive part number search functionality includes RoHS designation search options; the designation is mapped to each part in compliance with RoHS. While other part number search platforms simply steer users to a page describing a distributor's RoHS compliance policy, SourceESB.com users can quickly identify and purchase actual parts which are in compliance with RoHS.

"The addition of RoHS designations is an important move forward in the functionality of SourcESB's part number search," said Nick Hamersley, publisher of SourceESB.com. "Fifty percent of our client base currently has RoHS compliant components in stock, and we expect that to be reflected throughout our part search database by early 2007."

Often referred to as the "lead-free" directive, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) 2002/95/EC [1] restricts the use of hazardous materials [lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium (Chromium VI or Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether)] in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. The EU RoHS directive took effect on July 1, 2006 and is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods.

SourceESB.com provides OEM buyers and engineers with a wide variety of simplified, easy-to-use search tools, including one-click distributor and distributor inventory information, and part number searching.

SourceESB.com provides Web access to the extensive information compiled for Prism's SourceESB directories. For more than 20 years, OEM and CEM buyers and engineers have relied on SourceESB to locate electronic components, products and services available from thousands of listed component distributors, manufacturers, and service providers. SourceESB is part of Prism's extensive family of directory and rich data products serving a wide range of vertical industries.
