Fiberstars EFO(TM) Lights the World's First 'Green' Passenger Vessel

SOLON, Ohio, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Fiberstars, Inc. , the global leader in fiber optic lighting, announced today that it is providing exterior lighting for the RiverQuest Explorer, the world's first environmentally friendly "Green Boat." The RiverQuest Explorer is the brainchild of RiverQuest, a non-profit educational organization (formerly called Pittsburg Voyager). The ship includes approximately 110 different green technologies. The use of Fiberstars fiber optic products on this vessel, including Fiberstars EFO(R), highlights the durability and energy efficient characteristics of Fiberstars lighting.
In addition to providing an educational platform for 10,000 students a year, the Green Boat will serve as a real world application of sustainable design, a concept becoming commonplace for buildings but never seen before with marine vessels. The designers were looking for technologies that could incorporate design guidelines similar to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards for buildings, which have not yet been established for marine shipping. Fiberstars lighting solutions support RiverQuest's mission of providing a flagship vessel to inspire youth and provide river-based experiential learning about the environment, energy and sustainability. The Explorer replaced one of the organization's more polluting older ships, a former Navy ship built in 1965.
"The RiverQuest Explorer is an exciting project for Fiberstars, and further demonstrates the wide range of Fiberstars applications, including marine applications," said John Davenport, CEO of Fiberstars. "The selection of Fiberstars for this important educational project speaks to the unique qualities of our fiber optic technology and value proposition for buildings as well as marine vessels."
Fiberstars products are used in retail stores, restaurants, museums, hotels and casinos around the world in addition to US Navy ships at sea. Fiberstars lighting, along with the other environmentally friendly technologies on board the Explorer will reduce the overall energy consumption of the RiverQuest fleet by nearly 50% and will also eliminate a significant portion of its green house gas emissions.
