AT&T California Announces $225,000 in Grants to Support Technology and Educational Development for San Diego and Inland Empire Area Communities

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 December 2006, 15:00 CST

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, AT&T California announced more than $225,000 in Foundation grants to support education and technology initiatives for communities in the San Diego and Inland Empire areas. The new grants include a $25,000 grant to California State University at San Bernardino (CSUSB) to support the Mobile Computing for Future Mathematics Teachers project, which will provide laptops to teachers for math software instruction to students from low-income communities.

With today's announcement, AT&T California will have provided communities across the state with more than $5 million dollars in grants this year.

"AT&T is pleased to add to our continuing and long-standing efforts supporting education and technology initiatives," said Mark Leslie, AT&T vice president, External Affairs, San Diego. "AT&T, along with other forward-thinking California corporations, understand the critical role that technology plays in the development of today's workforce and in the marketplace."

The CSUSB project is designed to help future secondary and primary math teachers make good educational use of computer technology, taking advantage of recent developments in hardware, software, and educational research. The curriculum and instruction in these courses will use a mobile computer lab that will make it easier to use technology more spontaneously and in a more integrated fashion. It will also ease the logistical problem of scheduling class time in the school's dedicated computer lab.

"Cal State San Bernardino is grateful for support from the AT&T Foundation and its grant for our Mobile Computing for Future Mathematics Teachers project," said Albert K. Karnig, President of California State University, San Bernardino. "The technology training supported by this grant and offered by our faculty will greatly benefit the school districts, teachers, parents, and students."

Other key grants include: -- AT&T Excelerator grants for more than 20 organizations throughout the San Diego region. These include: - $20,000 grant to the San Diego Futures Foundation in support of its Seed the Need 2 project, which will provide hardware, software and technical support for three nonprofit agencies, helping to expand the administrative capacity and program services to underserved communities. - $20,000 grant to Riverside Community On-Line to support the SmartRiverside Innovation Center, which will provide incubator management of the TriTech Small Business Development Center which specializes in providing services to start-up businesses.
