NH Hoteles Deploys GO-Global Server-Based Solution for Easy Application Access From Anywhere

GraphOn Corporation (OTCBB:GOJO), a leading developer of application publishing and Web enabling solutions, today announced that the Netherlands business unit of NH Hoteles has deployed its GO-Global server-based computing solution.
NH Hoteles relies on "I Was Here" (IWH), a custom, Windows-based application used to track staff work hours, vacation time, and other information. The mission-critical application had been running on PCs located throughout hotel properties in the Netherlands. When organizational changes and database requirements dictated a move to a server-centric architecture, NH Hoteles selected GO-Global.
Today, the hotel business unit enjoys an efficient, cost-effective application publishing solution that is easier to maintain. The solution provides access to the application and databases from any location, and was deployed with little or no impact on the user community.
"We originally wrote the program in VB6, with Crystal Reports XI as an embedded report generator," said Sander van Leussen, Assistant Financial Controller at NH Hoteles. "Development was completed in 2002 and since then this software has become more and more important to us -- and now it is really critical."
"NH Hoteles had installed IWH at their hotel sites on multiple client PCs," said Rene de Lange of Acropolis Automation, one of GraphOn's EMEA distributors based in the Netherlands. "The database was located on each hotel's server, so it could not be accessed from outside of the hotel site."
Added van Leussen, "Because of organizational changes, we needed to access IWH at any hotel from every location. Our central office needed access to all hotels, while certain hotels needed access to other hotels."
The solve this challenge, NH Hoteles considered four alternatives:
Re-write IWH as a native Web application
Change the database to Microsoft SQL Server
Deploy Microsoft Windows Terminal Services (WTS)
Deploy GO-Global
"Rebuilding as a Web application would be very time-consuming and expensive, and was not a realistic option," explained van Leussen. "Changing to SQL Server and installing a central database server was considered, but this would require changes to the application plus excessive bandwidth."
The next two alternatives involved server-based computing where the application and all databases run on a central server. Each user is physically working on his own computer, but the program is running on the central server.
With Microsoft WTS, the entire desktop is delivered to each user who then sees a different screen than he or she is used to seeing. With GO-Global, only the application interface is delivered across the network, appearing as a familiar window on the user's existing desktop.
While WTS utilizes the RDP protocol and screen bitmap technology to transmit the entire desktop, GO-Global uses the patented RXP protocol to transmit only screen drawing commands and mouse and keyboard events. This highly efficient method provides for improved performance.
"Today GO-Global is being used by 200 concurrent users throughout the Netherlands," concluded van Leussen. "Performance is excellent, and printing and drive-mapping work great. And perhaps most importantly, users hardly feel any difference at all from the old distributed approach."
