Light Reading Insider Analyzes Eastern European Telecom Market
Posted on: Monday, 9 August 2004, 06:00 CDT
NEW YORK, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- . The newly minted EU8 nations -- eight emerging economies that have recently been added to the European Union -- are ready to develop their telecom infrastructure to catch up with their Western neighbors, according to a new report on the Eastern European telecom market from Light Reading Insider (http://www.lightreading.com/insider).
The report, entitled Telecom Opportunities in the EU8, finds that the newcomers to the European Union -- the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia -- are likely to take advantage of cost-effective emerging technologies such as carrier-grade Ethernet, MPLS, and VOIP to deliver next-generation services in Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, large international carriers such as BT, France Telecom, and AT&T continue to forge partnerships with local service providers and national incumbents in these territories.
"It's like the Internet boom is about to unfold all over again," says the report's editor, Scott Raynovich. "If you're looking for a place where telecom services aren't saturated and there is plenty of room for growth, this is it."
Light Reading Insider's Telecom Opportunities in the EU8 includes profiles of 30 national and international carriers involved in the Eastern European markets, as well as detailed demographic data and descriptions of key technology trends.
Key findings include:
* Eastern European carriers spend about $15 billion a year on computer,
telecom, and Internet hardware and software.
* Ethernet access is attracting the larger Eastern European carriers.
* A major challenge for incumbent land-line telcos involves playing
catch-up with wireless voice and data services.
* Primary land-line infrastructure is an underserved market, with the
potential for major equipment purchases.
