Micron Technology Says Demand Strong for Products

Posted on: Thursday, 12 August 2004, 06:00 CDT

Micron Technology Inc., the world's No. 2 maker of computer- memory chips, said Wednesday that its customers are predicting better-than-expected demand for their products.

Demand for chips that provide the memory for personal computers and notebooks will grow 15 percent to 20 percent this quarter from the prior quarter. That compares with a 15 percent to 17 percent increase in supply from Micron and competitors including Samsung Electronics Co., said Kipp Bedard, the Boise-based company's head of investor relations.

"The PC notebook guys are talking about better corporate demand than they would have expected," Bedard said at a Schwab Soundview Capital Markets semiconductor conference in San Francisco. "Customers are telling us that today demand is pulling pretty darned good."

Micron's optimism runs counter to what other chip and electronics makers are saying. National Semiconductor Corp. cut its first- quarter sales forecast Tuesday, citing customers trying to reduce inventories and weaker-than-expected orders for flat panel display chips and cell phone parts in China.

That was followed by comments by John Chambers, the chief executive of Cisco Systems Inc., who said that customers of the world's biggest maker of computer-networking equipment are becoming more cautious.
