New Market Study: Federal Telecom Networks Needs Are Carrier Class

Posted on: Tuesday, 9 January 2007, 09:00 CST

ASHBURN, Va., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A white paper released today, "Changing Government Telecom Network Requirements for the 21st Century," challenges conventional wisdom about how many federal agencies should address changing telecom network needs. The white paper from FedSources finds that the heightened telecom needs of many federal agencies now resemble the needs of carrier networks, as opposed to those of large enterprises. To help federal agencies meet the demand for carrier-class network performance, Tellabs is launching Tellabs Government Systems.

"Simply put, changing user needs have raised the bar for government telecom, and enterprise class is no longer sufficient for mission-critical government communications," said Steve McCarthy, executive vice president, global sales and service, Tellabs. "Federal networks require equipment that is carrier-class, and Tellabs Government Systems is dedicated to helping federal customers meet their increasingly complex network demands."

The paper examines four critical federal networks - Defense Information Systems Network (DISN), Department of Justice, Army LandWarNet and the FAA. Federal telecom networks are being forced to respond to heightened user requirements in an environment of swelling bandwidth needs and flat IT budgets. Agencies can meet these challenges by providing carrier-class service, characterized by:

-- 99.999% (five nines) availability (less than 5 minutes of downtime per year) -- Highest possible quality of service -- Dynamic traffic prioritization -- Application interoperability.

"This was a most interesting hypothesis from the start because it challenged a prevailing belief that government telecom customers should 'think and act' like enterprises," said Ray Bjorklund, senior vice president and chief knowledge officer, FedSources. "By the end of the project the evidence clearly showed that many government telecom networks have a scale and complexity that cannot be adequately addressed by enterprise-grade equipment."

For more than 30 years service providers have trusted Tellabs equipment to meet the critical needs of their customers, including government agencies. Tellabs equipment is deployed by all the major telecom service providers including Cingular, Sprint Nextel, BellSouth and Verizon, which uses Tellabs equipment to power its FiOS service and offer consumers an alternative to cable. The Tellabs Government Systems group is headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia.
