INTENT MediaWorks, the leading provider of technology for the distribution of licensed digital media content and advertising via the Internet, today announced that it is working with Nettwerk Music Group to digitally distribute Nettwerk’s large and ever expanding catalog of artists, which includes Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan and Avril Lavigne.

Founded in 1984, Nettwerk is an independent record label and music management firm that has its headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia and additional offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Nashville, London and Hamburg, Germany. In addition to BNL, McLachlan and Lavigne, the organization has recorded or managed internationally known artists such as Coldplay, Guster, Brand New, Stereophonics and Dido. Nettwerk has been responsible for the release of over 400 albums that have amassed worldwide sales in excess of 100 million copies, including multiple number one albums and singles.

“Nettwerk believes in putting music where fans spend their time and allowing them to decide how to consume it,” said Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwerk and one of the music industry’s most visionary proponents for the future of music distribution. “The job of the record company and manager is to get the music in front of every audience possible. INTENT’s approach to digital distribution is one of the first I’ve seen that takes advantage of the sheer volume of the peer-to-peer audience in a meaningful manner. It combines the promotional, marketing and revenue tools necessary for artists to take control of their art and career.”

INTENT puts licensed music and video into general circulation via a variety of Web sites, P2P networks and social network sites. Consumers search, discover, create and share music and video as they wish. INTENT’s unique technology tracks each file as it makes its way through the Internet, so the company and artist know how widely each file is spreading. With INTENT, consumers get licensed music and video on their terms, while artists and companies increase exposure and revenue.

“People have shared music for decades and the Internet and other online channels are a natural evolution of the practice. File sharers represent behavioral marketing at its best and should be embraced,” said Les Ottolenghi, CEO of INTENT MediaWorks. “INTENT brings much needed structure to the P2P market with a platform for legal, profitable and consumer-friendly distribution of digital entertainment. INTENT makes it possible for the entertainment industry to finally embrace the viral power of file trading and fully tap the Internet as a distribution and revenue channel.”

McBride and McLachlan, along with partners Dan Fraser and Marty Diamond, founded the Lilith Fair touring festival, which was the music industry’s dominant tour from 1997 to 1999 and raised more than $7 million for charities. Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Nelly Furtado, Queen Latifah, Emmylou Harris and Christina Aguilera were among the many artists who participated in Lilith Fair.
