Digital Lightwave(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:DIGL), a leading provider of optical networking technology and test instruments, today announced that New World Network has selected the Optical Wavelength Manager (OWM) in support of advanced optical network monitoring needs. New World Network has purchased the Digital Lightwave OWM for its advanced monitoring capabilities which will be used to ensure reliable operation of their Americas Region Caribbean Optical-ring System (ARCOS). ARCOS is an 8,600 km undersea broadband fiber-optic cable network. ARCOS is 8,600 km in length interconnecting the United States with Central America, South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The OWM provides an industry exclusive capability of real time optical monitoring, with the fastest update acquisition time as well as being the only tool capable of monitoring and detecting both short and long term transient events in optical networks. New World Network will utilize this feature to monitor and manage, with higher levels of assurance, their critical DWDM and SDH network performance.
"The extensive footprint of ARCOS requires the latest fiber optic testing technologies to keep performance at a maximum. The OWM plays an integral role in eliminating the blind spots of New World Network's optical ring through our near instant update acquisition times," said Mitch Chancey, Senior Vice President of Sales at Digital Lightwave. "We've designed the OWM for mission critical fiber networks allowing their owners to predict equipment failure through our advanced monitoring functionality. The ability to detect very small optical changes before they cause an outage or degradation potentially saves our customers in network equipment repairs, downtime and service level agreement (SLA) obligations."
The OWM is network-ready and web-enabled for local or remote monitoring from a network operations center. Using as little as a 1% tap, the OWM is designed for non-intrusive monitoring in central offices and points of presence in optical switch, cross-connect, add-drop or amplifier monitoring applications. The OWM is based on a highly reliable solid-state optics design with no moving parts. Since the OWM is not a scanning device it is capable of simultaneously monitoring up to 100 DWDM channels. The OWM accurately delivers all of the information needed to determine an optical channel's power, wavelength and optical signal to noise ratio.
