Jan. 9–Be aware of an e-mail from someone claiming to be a hired killer asking for money, warns the Bellingham Police Department.

The national e-mail scam claims the e-mail recipient has a hit out on them, and the sender will kill them unless they pay several thousand dollars and provide their phone number for contact, according to a news release.

The scam appears to target medical professionals, but police don’t know if it will expand, according to the news release.

If you receive this scam, please notify local police. Also notify the Internet Crime Complaint Center by filing a complaint at www.ic3.gov.
