Dell Begins Environmental Program

The chairman of Dell Computers suggested in Las Vegas that computer customers plant trees as a way to offset environmental damage caused by computers.

Michael Dell’s proposal was announced during the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. The Plant a Tree for Me program would collect money to be used by environmental groups to buy and plant trees, a company news release said.

Dell suggested donations of $2 for notebook computers and $6 for desktop models.

The program is available now to Dell’s U.S. consumer customers making new computer purchases. It will be available to any U.S. consumer for any brand of computer in February, and then opened to global consumers in April.

Dell is partnering with the Conservation Fund and the Carbonfund.org, non-profit organizations that will use the funds to plant trees in sustainably managed forests.

Programs like ‘Plant a Tree for Me’ and our global recycling efforts empower our customers to participate with us in making a difference, Dell said in a news release. It is our hope that other companies in our industry will join us to improve the environment that we all share.
