NCR Announces Hundreds of Job Cuts
By John Nolan, Dayton Daily News, Ohio
Jan. 11–DAYTON — NCR Corp. is cutting hundreds of manufacturing jobs at ATM-making plants from Texas to Scotland in a realignment of its financial self-service division that produces and sells the automated teller machines.
The restructuring is intended to cut costs while maintaining service to customers, said Bill Nuti, NCR’s president and chief executive officer.
NCR announced the plan Thursday morning, but declined to immediately release details as the employees who will lose their jobs were briefed in meetings at the ATM plants in the Dallas area and Dundee, Scotland; Waterloo, Canada and Sao Paolo, Brazil.
NCR said it will hire an outside company to run the ATM-making plants in the Americas, which include the Texas, Canada and Brazil plants. NCR is to identify the outside manufacturer later.
The Scotland plant will focus on building fewer but more sophisticated, multi-function ATMs and will end its mass-production of the more basic machines. The mass production of the lower-end ATMs will be shifted to NCR’s plants in China, Hungary and India.
NCR said it will keep its focus at the plants in Texas, Canada, Brazil and Scotland on development, engineering and marketing of advanced ATM products.
It is the second major announcement this week for NCR, the Dayton-based maker of ATMs, retail checkout systems and customer self-service kiosks used at airports, hotels and hospitals. NCR said on Monday that it plans to spin off its money-making Teradata data warehousing unit as a separate, publicly traded company by late this summer. That business will be spun off to holders of NCR’s common stock.
The company employs about 29,300 people worldwide, including approximately 2,000 in Dayton.
