Europe Gears Up for Next Generation of High-Speed Wireless Internet Hookups

Aug. 15--Wide-area high-speed wireless internet connections, known as wi-max, will be available throughout Europe by next year, according to a soon-to-be released report from giant French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel.
The report predicts wi-max, the wider-range version of wi-fi, will make portable internet a reality. "When wi-max chipsets will be integrated into laptops and other portable devices, it will provide high-speed data services on the move extending the limited coverage of public wireless local area networks to metropolitan areas."
In the report Alcatel commits itself to offer complete support for the deployment of wi-max "through the entire investment and operational cycle".
The report predicts that because of its relatively low deployment cost, wi-max will appeal to mobile operators wanting to provide high-speed mobile internet connections.
It will also have attractions for fixed-line operators trying to roll out broadband internet connections to areas where high unbundling costs or poor-quality copper wire connections make fixed-line broadband expensive.
Alcatel says that domestic wi-max networks will start to appear in 2005. It expects that the availability of wi-max enabled laptop computers in 2006 will act as a catalyst for the deployment of urban wi-max networks designed for mobile users.
The roll-out of wi-max networks in city centres is also being actively supported by global computer chip giant Intel.
