Limelight Networks Unveils Terabit Per Second Content Delivery Network

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 January 2007, 09:00 CST

TEMPE, Ariz., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Limelight Networks, the leading content delivery network for digital media, today announced a global delivery capability that now exceeds 1 Tbps (one terabit per second). Strong customer growth across all categories -- video, music, games and social media -- has driven Limelight to complete this infrastructure deployment milestone, shattering previous industry content network metrics.

Limelight's delivery capacity is a combination of highly scalable delivery services deployed at key regional locations in conjunction with massive provisioning to broadband last-mile networks. This architecture is ideally suited to the requirements of global digital media delivery, wherein increasingly large files, such as music, video, and movies, are being delivered to rapidly growing worldwide broadband audiences.

"Hitting terabit per second content delivery network capacity is a strong validation of both our architecture and our success with innovative, high-growth media and entertainment customers, who increasingly are turning to online rich media as their most promising growth opportunity," said Jeff Lunsford, chairman and CEO of Limelight Networks. "Our high performance content delivery network's design has allowed us to scale past this industry milestone in support of unprecedented customer demand. More exciting growth lies ahead: delivered file sizes are growing rapidly with increases in media quality and length, content libraries are expanding steadily as the Internet becomes a mainstream distribution channel, and the number of publisher-to-viewer connections is exploding as most new portable, desktop and entertainment devices are being built digital media-ready with full Internet connectivity."

Tom Hammer, CTO and VP of Engineering at Akimbo added that, "Because the Internet is Akimbo's primary distribution channel, selection of a CDN is a strategic business decision. Our leading edge video-on-demand service requires a content delivery network that can scale to provide a rapidly growing audience access to an enormous and increasingly rich content library. Limelight Networks has already anticipated the next generation of online entertainment with its high-performance, high-capacity CDN."

"This impressive capacity expansion of the Limelight Networks CDN could not come at a more opportune time," said Gerry Kaufhold, industry analyst with In-Stat. "Consumers worldwide are consuming rich digital media at unprecedented levels, and content providers need scalable content delivery services optimized for large audiences and high traffic levels. Limelight Networks' 1 terabit per second delivery capacity strongly reinforces the company's position as a leader in digital media content delivery. Limelight is delivering the future of TV, which is Internet video."

Limelight Networks offers three primary delivery services: Content Delivery, providing HTTP/web distribution of all digital media formats; Streaming Media, providing on-demand and live streaming for all major formats including Windows Media, Flash, QuickTime, Real, and MP3; and Custom CDN, which include custom content delivery deployments and solutions.
