L.A. Opera Home Closes for Repairs in ’11
Renovations to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 2011 will force its principal tenant, Los Angeles Opera, to search for a new home while the hall is closed.
The opera company has confirmed it already has begun scouting alternative venues in Southern California, Daily Variety said. It also is considering presenting six operas in the fall 2010 instead of the usual four, and possibly doing concert versions of operas in theaters with fewer seats than its 3,000-seat home.
L.A. Opera general director Placido Domingo also suggested the company would consider a tour of Japan.
This could extend our educational opportunities and (allows us to stage) special concerts, he said.
The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was built as a multipurpose hall in the mid-1960s.
