Japan Govt Lab Succeeds in High-Speed Data Flow Test on Optical Fibers

Posted on: Tuesday, 24 August 2004, 06:00 CDT

Tokyo, Aug. 24 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese government-linked research institute said Tuesday that in cooperation with telecommunications operator KDDI Corp. , it has successfully tested high-speed data transmission on long-distance optical fibers.

On July 2, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and a KDDI research unit jointly tested data flow on 200-kilometer cables between Tokyo and Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, at a speed of 160 gigabits per second, the institute said.

Using next-generation technology, called optical time domain multiplexing, the two institutes achieved a data flow speed 16 times that of current optical fiber-based communications.

OTDM reduces the number of required light sources and simplifies network management. The technology enables users to download four digital versatile discs' worth of data in just one second over a 200- kilometer optical cable.

The practical launch of OTDM-based optical fiber communications is expected for around 2010. Oki Electric Industry Co. is also engaged in similar experiments.END
