Swiss International Airlines Chooses AT&T As Global Network Provider

Posted on: Wednesday, 25 August 2004, 06:00 CDT

BASEL, Switzerland, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Swiss International Airlines, known as SWISS, has selected AT&T to provide a global virtual private network (VPN) to connect 36 key business locations around the world.

The three year $2.4 million deal will link 19 SWISS locations in Europe, 13 in the United States and four in Canada thorough the AT&T Global Network (AGN), AT&T's state-of-the-art infrastructure. The AGN uses the latest multi protocol label switching (MPLS) technology, which provides users with greater flexibility and efficiency in provisioning and maintaining global IT infrastructure.

In the United States, SWISS serves airports in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark and Washington, D.C.

The network will connect SWISS' key airport locations, sales offices and cargo centres around the world to the global company headquarters in Basel and should bring significant cost savings to the airline while helping to ensure higher performance and improved network reliability over the company's previous solution. SWISS will reduce costs on connectivity while the increased flexibility and reliability of its communication platform can be leveraged for further increase in productivity throughout the company - an important consideration in today's highly competitive aviation market.

The communications solution will provide access to critical airline systems on a global basis and will provide the airline with its "e-backbone" for internal applications such as e-mail, passenger information, and cargo manifests. It will allow real-time information sharing and data input by employees around the world as well as providing vital connectivity to customers and partners externally.

Through the convergence of voice and data networking in the managed VPN service, SWISS will also gain the ability to securely run additional critical applications, like Voice Over IP (VoIP), over the new network. Organizations currently adopting VoIP are seeing increased levels of productivity and performance as well as lower costs due to the consolidation of voice, video and data communications.

The airline is also using AT&T to connect to the Internet through the AT&T Global Managed Internet Service (GMIS). This robust infrastructure will ensure that customers contacting the airline to make bookings and reservations through the Internet -- an increasingly important distribution channel in the aviation industry -- are able to contact the carrier with the minimum risk of disruption and delay.

One of the major advantages to AT&T customers using the AT&T Global Managed Internet Service is that they can benefit from unique and extensive in-country peering relationships, giving them access to more than 2000 unique networks across more than 50 countries around the world. The service can be accessed from over 800 dedicated points of presence. All of this means that Internet connections are quicker and less likely to be disrupted by congestion as the traffic will access the network closer to the point of origin.

AT&T provides services to a wide range of aviation, transport and logistic companies around the world including Groupe EAD, linking 29 key air traffic control locations in 15 countries in Europe; Continental Airlines, a leading U.S. carrier; Aviapartners, one of Europe's leading airport ground handling companies; China Air and Finnair.

About AT&T For more than 125 years, AT&T (NYSE "T") has been known for leading-edge technology and unparalleled quality and reliability in communications. Backed by the research and development capabilities of AT&T Labs, the company is a global leader in local, long distance, Internet and transaction-based voice and data services.
