Amazon.com and TiVo Inc. have joined to let U.S. TiVo subscribers download movies and TV shows from the Internet and watch them on TV, the companies said.

Under the program, which will soon be launched across the United States, TiVo subscribers can rent or purchase videos from six networks and studios, including CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, through Amazon Unbox.

TV episodes will sell for $1.99 and most movies for $9.99 to $14.99, the companies said. Movies will rent for $1.99 and up. Amazon will store all bought videos for future access.

The television is and will continue to be the preferred platform for watching video content, TiVo programming Vice President Tara Maitra said.

The agreement helps TiVo, which pioneered the digital video recorder but now faces a slew of new rivals, and raises Amazon Unbox’s profile, which has had a lukewarm reception since its debut in September, The Wall Street Journal said.
