FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 2003--
Industry Collaboration Spurs One of the Largest Pilots of
3G CDMA2000 1X Technology to Power
the On-Demand Enterprise for Mobile Users
Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS), QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), Sierra Wireless (Nasdaq:SWIR) (TSX:SW), Sprint (NYSE:FON) (NYSE:PCS) and Trio Teknologies, today announced the launch of a four-city series of Mobile Access Technology Workshops designed to instruct enterprise organizations on how to improve anytime, anywhere, any-application, any-device wireless access for field professionals. Citrix customers participating in the workshops can enroll in a no-cost pilot program that provides access to enterprise applications over the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, giving them the ability to test a wireless deployment for free. The program represents on of the largest free pilots of 3G CDMA2000 1X technology for enterprise users to date.
The Mobile Access Technology Workshops will focus on helping participants understand the ways, means and benefits of powering the on-demand enterprise with mobile wireless access. During the half-day workshop, participants will get an overview of the mobility benefits delivered by the Citrix MetaFrame(R) Access Suite, a system of integrated products that provide easy, secure and instant access to managed enterprise resources, and simplify their deployment, management, monitoring and measurement in heterogeneous computing environments. Participants will also receive hands-on experience with the Sierra Wireless AirCard(R) 550, a wireless wide-area PC card, using a laptop or other mobile device. The AirCard 550 operates on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, which utilizes QUALCOMM's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital technology. Finally, participants will learn how to optimize their own Citrix servers for wireless application access to ensure the most efficient bandwidth utilization for an optimal user experience.
The Mobile Access Technology Workshops will be offered in New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Tampa from July 22 to August 21. For more information on the workshops and pilot program, and to register, please visit http://www.registerandcompute.com/mobileaccess.
60-Day Pilot Program: Benefits and Availability
By enrolling in the pilot program, workshop participants who have already deployed Citrix(R) MetaFrame XP(TM) Presentation Server will receive a Sierra Wireless AirCard 550 and free air time on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network for a 60-day trial period. As a result, Citrix customers can extend their use of Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server so that mobile workforces can access full-featured business applications over a third-generation (3G) Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN), without custom application rewrites or any other customization.
"We've seen first-hand the productivity benefits of extending our use of Citrix access infrastructure out to field employees," said John Webb, senior systems analyst, firefighter and EMT for the Overland Park Fire Department in Kansas. "For almost a year, our duty and battalion chiefs, medical coordinator, homeland security director and public information officer have relied on Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server to access their entire desktop wirelessly over the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. For example, our duty chief can easily and securely access our personnel management and automatic vehicle locator systems from the road in order to track the location of all of our firefighters and trucks, and re-route staff according to emergency needs. In addition, our homeland security director can access chemical databases for information on hazardous materials from anywhere, with data speeds that are fast and efficient. Through instant access to information, we can now provide even better service to our residents."
Citrix access infrastructure software allows organizations to easily extend their existing computing environment to the wireless world. As the foundation of the Citrix MetaFrame Access Suite, Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, the world's most widely deployed presentation server, enhances the performance of custom or commercially packaged Windows(R) or Web applications that are accessed wirelessly because it eliminates the traditional requirement of transferring entire applications over a network. Since application processing takes place on a central server, only keystrokes, mouse clicks and screen captures are transferred between the mobile device and server. Citrix access infrastructure software also addresses security concerns through robust authentication and encryption features and the fact that no data is required to be stored on the mobile device.
Wireless access from the Sierra Wireless AirCard 550 further improves overall application performance through superior connection times to the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, which utilizes QUALCOMM's CDMA digital technology. The CDMA2000 1X wireless network from Sprint delivers average data speeds between 50 and 70 Kbps, with peak performance of up to 144 Kbps. As a result, customers can access almost any size application with exceptional performance on wireless devices.
As a member of the Citrix Business Alliance(TM) and a distributor for the PCS Business Solutions(SM) Program, Trio Teknologies will serve as the exclusive distributor for the pilot program so that customers have one point of contact to enroll in the 60-day trial. The PCS Business Solutions Program is an enterprise distribution channel for Sprint wireless data products which includes some of the largest and most experienced distributors, systems integrators, value-added resellers (VAR) and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the IT industry.
Strengthened Partnership
In related news, QUALCOMM has joined Sierra Wireless and Trio Teknologies as a Premier member of the Citrix Business Alliance, a coalition of industry-leading companies that work with Citrix to broaden the scope and effectiveness of its access infrastructure solutions. The program provides members with access to Citrix products for compatibility-testing with the Citrix MetaFrame Access Suite, new business opportunities with other Citrix solution providers, joint marketing programs and enhanced technical support.
Industry Support
"With budgets shrinking, IT managers are reluctant to adopt new technologies without thorough analysis and testing. The Mobile Access Technology Workshops give organizations a risk-free way to ensure that the solution will meet their application access needs and deliver a return on investment," said David Jones, senior vice president of corporate development for Citrix. "The largest ever 3G pilot made possible by intense collaboration between industry leaders is early proof of the value we intend to bring to our customers as wireless technology continues to evolve."
"Sprint is pleased to work with our PCS Business Solutions partners on this pilot program and offer mobile employees the opportunity to trial a solution that provides wireless access to company information and applications," said Phil Bowman, vice president, business marketing, PCS Division, Sprint. "This bundled wireless data solution provides business customers with a tool that can help them to increase productivity, reduce costs, enhance customer satisfaction and create a competitive edge."
"Citrix transformed remote access when it first introduced the MetaFrame Access Suite for the dial-up user," said Jan Dehesh, vice president of corporate marketing for QUALCOMM. "With enterprise mobility applications based on 3G CDMA wireless networks, Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server users aren't restricted to finding a landline connection. The enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network provides ubiquitous wireless data coverage and speeds better than landline dial-up, which allows end-users to have instant access to their corporate applications without having to find the nearest phone jack."
"The Citrix Mobile Access Technology Workshops with the 60-day evaluation program is exactly the forum the marketplace needs to educate business customers on the mobile data solutions available today," said Gordon Dahl, president of Trio Teknologies. "We understand the benefits first hand since we use Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server over WWAN to access our own business applications. The current nationwide network of 3G CDMA is hands down the best solution available. It provides the coverage, speed and minimal latency necessary to deliver a 'LAN-like' user experience."
"Wireless data solutions continue to deliver a competitive advantage to companies who need to stay connected while on the road," said Jason Cohenour, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Sierra Wireless. "This program will offer those companies who have yet to experience the benefits of wireless data an easy, risk free way to test the impact on their business. We are confident that participants in the program will find that wirelessly extending their computing environment is compelling in its simplicity and business return."
