Few Electronic Disruptions Hit Republican Convention

NEW YORK (AP) -- The electronic disruptions threatened during the Republican National Convention were minimal at most, the convention's infotech head said Friday.
One speaker at this summer's Defcon hackers conference advocated disrupting this week's convention, and at least one group had released tools online to mount so-called denial-of-service attacks aimed at overwhelming Republican Web sites, including the convention's.
Max Everett, the convention's director of information technology, said he took the threats seriously and responded by increasing the site's capacity and blocking traffic from Internet addresses in the ranges notorious for launching such attacks.
Based on preliminary reports, Everett said, "I don't think there were what we would consider any serious attempts to knock the Web site down."
But one company that monitors Internet performance, AlertSite, said it had trouble connecting to GOPConvention.com in the late morning and late evening hours Thursday - a sign either of heavy traffic or a denial-of-service attack. Everett said he had yet to fully analyze internal reports but saw nothing unusual in the preliminary readings.
