PARIS, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has teamed up with Gonzaga University to provide a comprehensive data and wireless network at the University, located in Spokane, WA. The new network will support the approximately 7,500 staff, faculty and students at Gonzaga University, and will also extend the reach of the institution to support its distance learning students located around the world. The new network has allowed Gonzaga to transform the services it is offering its students and staff by significantly enhancing the speed, access, reliability and security of their network.
Gonzaga's new combined data and wireless network is part of Alcatel- Lucent's higher education portfolio that delivers complete end-to-end communication solutions specifically tailored to meet the needs of educational campus environments. Gonzaga selected Alcatel-Lucent's networking solution for its high-availability, high-reliability and value, which university officials viewed as critical to delivering a feature-rich network serving their needs today, and into the future.
"We wanted a network that could accommodate extensive data-driven activities that are a priority to users at our university, such as rich media, distance learning and voice-over-IP," said Chris Gill, director of IT Project Management and Planning, at Gonzaga University. "The Alcatel-Lucent solution enables us to transform the services we offer by allowing us to deliver the most advanced technology capabilities and bandwidth requirements, while at the same time protecting against potential threats through the highly secure network. Administrators, educators and students are all happy with the results."
The reliability of Alcatel-Lucent's portfolio ensures that the highest levels of service are met while also supporting the security demands of higher education networks. Gonzaga employs virtual local area networks (VLANs) to control individual access to network services, administrative information and grades, and separate but interconnected networks for faculty and staff, and for students. The same tight secure access is used in Gonzaga's wireless network, which is distributed across the campus in key academic locations including the library, student center and soon the entire campus.
"Alcatel-Lucent is a key technology partner for Gonzaga," added Gill. "They have developed an active partnership with us that went outside of the box to deliver excellent service."
"Gonzaga University is an excellent example of how higher education institutions are utilizing their networks as a means for transforming their business and the services they offer their staff and students," said Hubert de Pesquidoux, President of Alcatel-Lucent enterprise activities. "With the right solutions in place, educational institutions are realizing that the needs of a new generation of tech-savvy faculty and students can be fulfilled. More importantly, networks like Gonzaga's allow the University to truly differentiate themselves, simplifying and enhancing the learning process across a global campus, increasing overall user satisfaction and enriching the reputation of the school."
