Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Deploys Camstar's Manufacturing Execution System for Operations in Asia

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 February 2007, 15:00 CST

Camstar (http://www.camstar.com), the leading provider of Enterprise Manufacturing Execution and Quality Systems (http://www.camstar.com/products.aspx), announced today that Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, a global provider of feature-rich serialized mobile phones, has successfully deployed Camstar's InSite Enterprise Manufacturing Execution System to provide control and visibility, data collection and traceability, and to synchronize manufacturing activities in real-time with other core business systems.

Sony Ericsson selected Camstar's InSite for its flexibility and adaptability to an always changing business environment, and for its open architecture which integrates with business systems and shop floor testers, and provides data synchronization through automatic data import and export. Sony Ericsson's manufacturing operation necessitates extremely high production volumes and strict traceability requirements. A critical business requirement was the ability to track unit information per serial number and enable a paperless repair process, with accessible history data and efficient archiving.

Camstar's InSite is a highly configurable Enterprise Manufacturing Execution System (http://www.camstar.com/insite.aspx), which on a peak day of production handles over 83,000 units in Sony Ericsson's Beijing, China plant. InSite processes high transaction volumes, continuously around-the-clock, with input from 9,000 operators working on more than 100 production lines. InSite also manages the unique label configuration and printing demands of nearly 700 customers in 119 countries. Sony Ericsson's future rollout plans include expansion of the solution to an additional plant.

According to Hiroyuki Tanaka, Vice President of Planning and Logistics Control for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, they have realized optimized yields, increased volume, and shortened production cycle times with a low cost of maintenance. "We shipped 8.5 million units in the third quarter of 2006, a 25% increase over the same period last year -- this is supported by Camstar's InSite," said Mr. Tanaka.

"We are very pleased to be working with Sony Ericsson on this project," said Morris St. Angelo, Camstar's Vice President and Managing Director of Asia Operations. "Camstar's solutions offer extensive configurability and interoperability, which make them a perfect fit for electronics companies looking to rapidly increase volume and traceability to significantly impact their top line."
