Posted on: Monday, 19 February 2007, 21:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) will host U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Carlos M. Gutierrez, on February 22, 2007 to keynote the 5th U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group to be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Secretary Gutierrez, having just returned from his first mission to India, will discuss emerging avenues of trade and cooperation in High Technology. The program will also feature Deputy Secretary of Commerce David A. Sampson and Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon who will open the HTCG meeting: A Strategic Partnership for the 21st Century -- New Horizons for U.S. -- India Business.

This day-long business-to-business interactive discussion will address critical issues affecting U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation in areas such as Information Technology, Telecommunications, Defense/Strategic Cooperation, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, and Intellectual Property. The private sector business interactions will inform the bilateral discussions between the Government of India and U.S. Government scheduled for the following day.

The 2007 HTCG will concentrate on streamlining the export control regimes of the two countries that hamper trade and investment in High Technology, as well as open a dialogue about Indian eligibility for the U.S. Department of Commerce's new Validated End-User program (VEU), also known as the Trusted Customer Program.

"The evolving dialogue of the High Technology Cooperation Group shows deepening interest in High Technology trade and investment consistent with the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership -- which culminated last year in passage by the U.S. Congress of civilian nuclear cooperation between the U.S. and India," commented USIBC's President, Ron Somers. "Our objective for this Summit is to deepen high technology trade and investment between the world's two largest free-market democracies."

The United States-India Business Council (USIBC) is the premier advocacy organization representing the largest U.S. companies investing in India, joined by global Indian companies, promoting economic reforms to deepen trade and broaden commercial ties with India.
