ST GEORGES, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Dr Keith has initiated court action against a local radio station and its owners over charges that he was libelled by the station.
The Office of the Attorney General on Friday filed a suit against against Andall and Associates and Spice Media, the operators of radio station 90.1 FM, a government statement confirmed Monday.
The lawsuit claims that the radio station owned by the parties named in the suit libelled the Prime Minister and his Office in various broadcasts by radio commentator Eddie Frederick.
Attorney General Elroy Nimrod is seeking damages and an injunction preventing the station from making similar broadcasts.
Mitchell had previously threatened to initiate court action against unnamed media houses over claims made in the so-called “Briefcase Scandal”, which has been the subject of raging political debate here and which led to a walk out of opposition legislators from Parliament during the budget debate last December. Grenada’s Governor General Sir Daniel Williams appointed Barbadian jurist Sir Richard Cheltenham as the lone commissioner to probe the allegations in the scandal, but the commission was was suspended about a year ago without presenting any conclusions or without any further word on its future.
