Google Inc. Thursday began selling word processing, spreadsheets and other business software online, challenging U.S. software giants Microsoft and IBM.
Google Apps Premier Edition costs $50 per user account a year, and includes round-the-clock phone support, 10 gigabytes of storage -- 100 times the storage of an average corporate mailbox -- and a new set of administration and business integration capabilities, Google said.
All Apps services are guaranteed to be available 99.9 percent of the time, the Mountain View, Calif., company said, and businesses can turn off Google's advertising.
Google also is adding mobile access to e-mail accounts through BlackBerry wireless handheld devices.
Procter & Gamble is among Google Apps Premier's charter business customers, Google said.
Google has offered a free basic Apps version since August, with more than 100,000 small businesses and hundreds of universities nationwide using it, Google said.
The new product challenges Microsoft Corp.'s market-leading Office suite and IBM Corp.'s Lotus suite.
