Boston Software Systems Unveils First and Only Dashboard for Continuous Operational Visibility

Posted on: Monday, 26 February 2007, 09:00 CST

Boston Software Systems(TM), the leader in workflow automation technology to the healthcare market, today introduced a new Dashboard for the latest version of Boston WorkStation(TM) 9.0, the company's flagship workflow automation and systems integration technology. The centralized dashboard provides a visible way to manage, change or analyze the performance of the myriad scripts running throughout a hospital. By logging in error rates and task time for each script, the dashboard can enable staff to evaluate the efficiency of procedures and of users. Quick drill-down to supporting details helps identify most productive and problem areas, and enhance operational efficiency.

Boston Software Systems will be introducing Boston WorkStation 9.0 at the HIMSS Product Pavilion, Booth #3120, New Orleans, February 26 - March 1. For more information please visit the 2007 HIMSS Exhibition website.

Executives will also showcase Boston WorkStation's service oriented architecture (SOA), which enables organizations to integrate systems, data, applications, scripts and processes by creating a common platform of communication, and then connect to the dashboard for central visibility. Each script can be modified whenever necessary to support flexible and dynamic business processes.

"We have Boston WorkStation scripts running in virtually every department. Managing those scripts -- changing their schedules or making adjustments -- can be time consuming," said Ross Stolle, integration engineer at Avera Health Systems. "Centralizing the management of scripts into a single dashboard will make our jobs so much easier. As an organization committed to the concepts of Lean Processing, Avera Health is also interested in the reporting capabilities. This will present a strategic view of additional opportunities for using Boston WorkStation and enable management to better understand process efficiencies and time savings."

Forrester Research analysts Ken Vollmer and Mike Gilpin report that an SOA approach could reduce application development and maintenance costs by 30 percent or more ("The ROI of SOA," Network World, Oct. 10, 2005). Ultimately, an SOA provides a much more agile environment for process orchestration, integration across applications and collaboration between users.

As hospitals automate existing workflows and develop new ones, Boston WorkStation allows staff to apply a logical, user-centric approach to automation. As a result, scripts become the electronic workforce, performing the same tasks the same way each time, just as a staff member would.

Boston WorkStation also allows developers to create scripts that can watch over the user's shoulder -- prompt for entries, call up applications or send notifications. The added ability to oversee all Boston WorkStation tasks lets developers manage scripts running throughout the enterprise from one dashboard, and evaluate workflows to understand where to optimize productivity.

Features for Hospitals:

ION - By watching the screen activity of users, workflow may be remotely managed, allowing management to automatically enforce policies, streamline interaction with additional applications and create appropriate notifications.

SOA - Hosts or connects to Web services to access or deliver information across the enterprise or to the Internet.

Features for Partners:

Remote Development Management over the Internet - With appropriate access from their customers, vendors may remotely control the scripts associated with installed applications or solutions thereby simplifying support issues.

SOA - Hosts or connects to Web services to access or deliver information across the enterprise or to the Internet.

"By automating mundane and time-intensive tasks, the human workforce is being augmented by an electronic workforce -- from staff level through management," said Steve Cohen, executive vice president, Boston Software Systems. "While patient safety and quality of care have always been top priorities in hospitals, there's a greater demand to stay ahead of the curve on cost, and operational and business efficiency. By helping hospitals not only simplify their existing processes, but also manage them from one central location, Boston WorkStation saves customers weeks of work and thousands of dollars, and enables them to focus on their core competencies."

Like previous releases, Boston WorkStation 9.0 uses powerful Visual Basic for Applications(R) (VBA) and is also compatible with VB6 and .Net(R). The list of built-in connections is expanded including Digital OCR and native Java. Boston WorkStation is completely compatible with any Windows-based application including Citrix environments.

Pricing and Availability

Boston WorkStation 9.0 is available in the first quarter of 2007. The software is sold as a run time or developer license, and as a site or enterprise license for use throughout a facility.
