Sep. 11--TOKYO -- Kyocera Corp. plans to release a personal handyphone system data communications device in the Chinese market this autumn, targeting a new service to be launched by China Telecommunications Corp., a Japanese business daily reported Saturday.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said China Telecom plans to launch the wireless data communications service -- the first of its kind in the country -- in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, in November for a monthly fixed rate of 300 yuan or about $35.
The report said Kyocera's card-type PHS device, which is inserted into a personal computer, will sell for 400 yuan, almost the same as the price in Japan.
"Sales of more than 10 million (PHS data communications devices) would be possible" if China Telecom's new flat-rate service spreads across the nation, the report quoted a Kyocera official as saying.
