Conexant Delivers Cost-Reduced Digital Video Broadcast Set-Top Box Decoder

Posted on: Monday, 4 August 2003, 06:00 CDT

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2003--

New IC Based on Conexant's High Performance Single-chip Platform

for Basic, Cost-sensitive Set-top Boxes

Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for digital home information and entertainment networks, today introduced a cost-reduced single-chip integrated circuit family for set-top box (STB) applications. The CX2414X product family is a derivative of the company's recently announced, highly integrated CX2415X single-chip, interactive STB system solution. The new digital video broadcast (DVB) compliant device has been optimized to provide a cost-effective solution for non-interactive satellite and terrestrial Free-to-Air (FTA) based services in Asia and the Middle East, and the broadcast cable market in China and India.

"Increasingly, set-top box manufacturers are looking to leverage a common hardware platform that can be reused over various broadband networks and for multiple applications," said Jeffrey Crosby, vice president of Conexant's Set-top Box Products business. "Our new CX2414X product family meets this need. It can serve as either a common back-end platform that easily interfaces to a variety of broadband front-ends, or as a cost-effective system solution for a variety of set-top box applications, which allows manufacturers to minimize hardware and software development costs."

The CX2414X family is based on a 133MHz ARM9 32-bit RISC processor core, and is software and pin compatible with the company's previously announced CX2415X. This allows manufacturers to leverage a single hardware and software platform across low- and high-end product lines, thereby maximizing engineering resources. An additional cost-saving feature is support for DVB common interface modules that eliminates the need for a separate interface controller chip, which reduces cost and board space.

The CX2414X family is integrated into a fully engineered set-top box reference development system that incorporates third-party interactive middleware/RTOS platforms for complete functionality. The hardware platform comes equipped with fully integrated Nucleus+, pSOS and VxWorks runtime libraries and driver software components. The set-top box development platform hardware is designed in a two-layer PCB configuration and includes a choice of two robust tool chain development environments for code developers. Conexant also offers a complete development code solution that has been tightly integrated with third party tool environments.

Pricing and Availability

The CX2414X family is packaged in a compact 27mm ball grid array (BGA). The CX24142 is priced at $14.00 and the CX24146 at $11.00 in high volume quantities. The devices are sampling now, with volume production scheduled for October 2003.
