Church Praises Miracle of eBay
AN ANTIQUE wine jug stolen from a church more than 40 years ago has been returned after it was put up for sale on eBay.
The ornate flagon was stolen from St John the Baptist Church in Treswell, Nottinghamshire, in 1965.
But last month, an eagle-eyed churchgoer contacted officials after seeing the inscribed flagon attracting bids of around Pounds 500 on the Internet auction site.
They contacted police, who were able to stop the sale and return the flagon to its rightful place. The seller, it later emerged, had bought it at an auction several years ago. It is still not known who stole it.
The flagon will be stored in a safe away from church premises.
The Rev Canon Tony Walker, spokesman for the church, said: ‘It was a remarkable detective job.’
