-- Company announces initiative today at Chicago software developers conference

-- Flexible, non-proprietary tools and components simplify development and integration, company says

Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced an initiative to focus its development of software tools on the standards for service oriented architecture (SOA), reaffirming its longstanding commitment to open, non-proprietary software architectures. Today, Intermec provides libraries of software tools and utilities, stand-alone applications and custom development through its authorized independent software vendor (ISV) partners. Intermec will continue to support these programs while transitioning its own product development efforts to focus on SOA components for customers and partners.

Intermec announced the initiative at its software developers' conference today in Chicago.

Service oriented architecture features the use of software components that can be used and reused to quickly create applications and to simplify integration with disparate legacy systems. By 2008, 60 percent of enterprises will base their software development on service oriented architecture, according to Gartner. "By 2008, SOA will be a prevailing software engineering practice, ending the 40-year domination of monolithic software architecture," according to the Gartner report, "Service-Oriented Architecture: Mainstream Straight Ahead."

Intermec, which has developed thousands of mobile computing applications over the course of 30 years, will mine components from its vast software library that can be packaged as application services and made available for customer and partner reuse. Intermec also will develop tool kits and additions to the Intermec Developer Library, providing device services that will ease the integration of Intermec products into complete applications. The initiative will significantly expand the resources available to customers and partners for mobile computer application development.

Intermec has a history of leadership in mobile application software, helping companies successfully move with the technology changes that have impacted development for mobile platforms. From the creation of proprietary operating systems for mobile computers, to support for DOS and later through the transition to the market-leading Microsoft Pocket PC platform, Intermec has consistently provided the essential tools developers need to create efficient mobile applications.

The company's new software services will support both .NET and Java environments and will add value to customers by simplifying integration and aligning mobile operations with emerging enterprise IT and development environments. Intermec will continue to support and develop custom software applications to meet specific customer requirements, but will focus its software product development efforts on creating components and tools to support application creation by partners and customers.

"Intermec has always been committed to providing a well-rounded software portfolio so our customers and partners can get exactly what they need, whether it is a complete application, a development tool or custom programming," said Intermec Software Products Director Bob Eckles. "Basing future software development on service oriented architecture standards will expand and enhance this commitment by providing flexible components that reduce software development time and allow users to access Intermec-provided services, all while working in their preferred programming environments."
