MySpace Policing Fake Cop Sites

MySpace.com says some of the profile pages representing police or sheriff's departments on the popular Internet networking site are fakes.
While MySpace has encouraged police to have a presence on the site as a way to deter online sexual predators, at least six of the 16 law enforcement profile pages on MySpace were bogus, USA Today reported.
MySpace also has closed down pages claiming to represent the New York Police Department profile, the Fairfax County Police, New Jersey State Police and the Coral Gables Police Department. Six other police profiles are being investigated.
Legitimate police pages on MySpace include Newton, N.H., Smithville, Ohio, Haverhill, Mass., Newburyport, Mass., and Miami-Dade, Florida, the newspaper said.
Frustration over the problem of sexual predators has led the state of Connecticut to propose legislation that would require social networking sites to verify the ages of their users, The Christian Science Monitor reported.
Postings by those under 18 would require parental permission, the newspaper said.
