N2 Broadband Announces Software Solution That Enables Efficient Management of Multiple Network Resources
Posted on: Tuesday, 21 September 2004, 06:00 CDT
ATLANTA, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- N2 Broadband Inc., the leading provider of scalable, open-standard solutions for on-demand entertainment, today unveiled the OpenStream(TM) Enterprise Session Resource Manager (eSRM), the industry's first open standards-based solution that enables customers to centrally and securely share network resources between multiple services such as cable video-on-demand (VOD), IP video, high-speed data, voice-over IP (VoIP), television commerce, and other interactive services. Through N2's Any Stream, Anywhere(TM) capabilities, eSRM also enables dynamic sharing of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) resources across video servers, independent of hardware, which can provide significant cost benefit to customers.
"Some of our largest customers want to purchase eSRM as a stand-alone product outside of the full OpenStream platform," said Reggie Bradford, president and CEO of N2 Broadband. "The eSRM module responds to that need and enables our customers to scale beyond traditional VOD in support of a growing number of new interactive services."
While the eSRM has already been widely deployed as a part of the OpenStream platform, it is now being trialed as a stand-alone product by a major multi-system operator (MSO) and will be commercially available by fourth quarter of 2004.
eSRM and N2's Any Stream, Anywhere(TM) capabilities enable cable operators to break free of the hardware constraints that currently require each video server's network capacity to be "hard wired" to a finite group of cable subscribers. Existing constraints force cable operators to size their systems to accommodate peak demand levels, even though typical demand levels may be much lower. N2's eSRM module enables cable operators to share QAM resources dynamically between video servers, resulting in more efficient usage of network bandwidth while still providing capacity for peak demand levels. This dramatically reduces the need for extra hardware, while providing a seamless path for operators to support both MPEG-2 and IP services simultaneously.
The eSRM also helps maintain sessions across system re-starts to minimize hardware and software damage from abnormal processes by attempting to recover interrupted sessions and detecting and deleting leaked network resources.
