OKI Releases EML Driver IC for 10Gbps Optical Communication With World's Lowest Power Consumption

Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:6703) today announced the launch of KGL5115KD, a 10Gbps EML(1) driver IC for optical communication. The new IC has one of the world's smallest footprints and achieves the world's lowest power consumption at just 0.45W (at 2.3Vpp amplitude). Samples of these products are available starting today. OKI will present the KGL5115KD at its booth (#3351) at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOE2007), which will be held from March 27th to 29th at Anaheim, California. http://www.ofcnfoec.org

10Gbps optical communication modules are becoming pluggable, which requires that it be easy to attach and remove from the connectors. Because of this trend there is stronger demand for smaller and lower power consumption optical and electronic components such as optical modulators and driver ICs that compose optical communication modules to solve the heat and cost issue when size becomes smaller. The KGL5115KD is a 10Gbps EML driver IC for 10Gbps optical communication that operates on a power supply of 3.3V. While maintaining the high quality wave pattern characteristics of OKI's driver ICs using GaAs PHEMT(3), OKI succeeded in reducing power consumption by 25% compared to conventional models, achieving power consumption of just 0.45W at an output amplitude of 2.3Vpp, the lowest in the industry. An extremely small footprint was also achieved by using a 4mm by 4mm small ceramic package.

Tsuboi continued, "We will continue to leverage our strengths in high-speed, high voltage processing devices, and from the fiscal year ending March 2009, we plan to achieve sales revenue of one billion yen with EML driver ICs including this product in the 10Gbps optical communication market."
