China: MMF Production Jumps 31% in Jan.-May

China's nationwide production of man-made fibers during the first five months of this year increased by 31.06% from the year before to 5,662,900 tons, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Of this, viscose fiber rose by 18.65% to 389,400 tons, while synthetic fibers grew by 32.47% to 5,218,400 tons.

May production increased by 32.93% compared to the same month of 2003, but declined by 4.56% from April to 1,131,900 tons.

Most MMF sales prices went up on the domestic market in May, such as polyester staple fiber (up 2.42%), acrylic fiber (up 0.06- 1.19%), polyester filament yarn (up 4.46%), polyester chips (up 1.05%) and nylon filament yarn (up 1.92%). Market prices declined for viscose staple fiber and viscose filament yarn, down 3.84 and 0.84-3.74% respectively.

According to NBS statistics for January-May 2004, the sales income of 1,008 local MMF producers increased by 37.8% compared to the corresponding period of last year, while costs, amount of profits and gross value of industrial production based on current prices increased by 37.34%, 1,173 million yuan (US$140.76 million) and 37.14% respectively.

Customs statistics show that during the first five months of 2004, China imported 746,500 tons of MMF, an increase of 13.05% or 86,200 tons from the year before. Of this, viscose fiber rose by 70.39% or 13,600 tons to 32,900 tons, along with synthetic fibers by 11.33% or 72,600 tons to 713,600 tons.
