A band dancing on treadmills, a bare-chested man’s rant about his hot apartment and a Ninja explaining podcasting are the first victors of the YouTube Awards.
The video-sharing Web site that turns average Joes into stars announced Monday the best of a bevy of homemade entertainment a mouse click away.
And the winners are:
MOST ADORABLE _ New York School of Visual Arts grad Dony Permedi’s animated video “Kiwi!” was done for a master’s thesis on animation. But it’s fetched more than 6.5 million views since it was put on YouTube last November. “I think it’s great,” Permedi, 25, said of the video’s success. “I went from 20,000 to 2 million views in five days.”
BEST MUSIC VIDEO _ Upstate New York farm girl Terra Naomi’s acoustic guitar performance of “Say it’s Possible” has drawn over 1.3 million views and scored her a record deal.
MOST CREATIVE _ The Chicago band OK GO showed that treadmills are more than for running on. Set to their rock song “Here it Goes Again,” the four members perform a choreographed dance on eight moving treadmills.
BEST COMEDY _ California duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, together known as Smosh, recorded a ditty called “Stranded” about three guys lost on a deserted island for 53 days.
BEST COMMENTARY _ A bare-chested Canadian blogger known as The Wine Kone rants about his hot apartment in this offering called “Hotness Prevails/Worst Video Ever.” The Wine Kone attracted 1.7 million views by saying things like, “I smell like a wet dog.”
BEST SERIES _ A Ninja, clad all in black, answers questions about Ninja life and killing with his bare hands.
MOST INSPIRATIONAL _ Australian Juan Mann triggered a hugging frenzy by walking around in public places holding a sign reading: “Free Hugs.” He gets passersby, skateboarders and even a woman in a car.
