EDS to Roll Out Microsoft System Center As Global Standard for Managing Windows Servers and Desktops
Posted on: Friday, 30 March 2007, 09:00 CDT
PLANO, Texas, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EDS today announced that it will use Microsoft System Center solutions (including Operations Manager and Systems Management Server) to more efficiently manage its Windows servers and desktops. The global technology services company also will use its patent-pending Enterprise Operations Manager (EOM), built on Operations Manager 2005 to deliver critical services to its global enterprise clients.
EDS' EOM represents a unique collaboration between Microsoft and EDS to use Operations Manager to manage multiple enterprises in a centralized fashion. EDS found that Operations Manager also provides the detailed monitoring capabilities the global IT leader needs to ensure that servers supporting mission-critical applications are healthy and optimized. EDS' EOM will manage alerts and extend corrective actions to more than 100,000 Windows-based servers globally.
With more than 3 million Windows-based systems under management worldwide, EDS looks to Microsoft Systems Management Server to facilitate centralized software deployment and user support. In implementing Systems Management Server, EDS achieved significant productivity gains, reducing the deployment time of security patches by 92 percent, with 90 percent coverage in five days, versus previous methods that resulted in 60 percent coverage in 50 days. Additionally, EDS found that the adoption of Systems Management Server provides productivity improvements of 180,000 hours per year on automated software deployment services, which will result in 23 percent savings over five years and a 50 percent reduction in resources to manage Windows-based servers.
"EDS looked to Microsoft System Center solutions as the standard to manage Windows environments," said Matt Trevorrow, EDS' vice president of Workplace Services. "In addition to the demonstrated gains in productivity, EDS believes that System Center has the proven scalability and mission-critical reliability to effectively manage and monitor our clients' Windows-based environments."
As a member of the EDS Agility Alliance, Microsoft provides the standard platform for EDS' desktop and server operating systems, and integrated development environments. EDS clients turn to the alliance for development, management and modernization of their mission-critical applications and infrastructure, including the next generation of .NET, workplace and mobility solutions. The use of Operations Manager aligns with EDS' global standardized work practices and contributes to the company's "zero outages" mindset, while reducing cost and improving quality and the client experience -- from the desktop to the data center.
"Microsoft is pleased to have a global IT leader like EDS commit to the Microsoft System Center family of solutions," said Kirill Tatarinov, corporate vice president of Windows Enterprise Management Division. "We applaud EDS' continued innovation around the use of Operations Manager and Systems Management Server as they demonstrate best practices in the delivery of critical services to their customers."
EDS' 14 physical and two virtual hubs are strategically located around the world and provide the framework for the regional delivery of services to deliver high-quality, low-cost services based on standard operating environments. The three hubs that EDS has already deployed EOM are located in Plano, Texas; Doxford, United Kingdom; and Russelheim, Germany; with a further deployment planned for Burwood, Australia.
The EDS Agility Alliance is a coalition of market-leading infrastructure, application and business process outsourcing providers collaborating to innovate, develop and deliver the EDS Agile Enterprise Platform -- EDS' next-generation global delivery system. EDS Agility Alliance partners include Cisco, Dell, EMC, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Sun Microsystems, Towers Perrin and Xerox.
