PROVIDENCE – GTECH Corporation donated a computer lab to the Providence Interim Middle School yesterday as part of its After School Advantage program.

The lab is equipped with five new computers, three digital cameras, a color printer and new desk and chairs. The lab also received a fresh coat of paint and wall decorations, donated by GTECH employees. The computer lab will be used by students in fifth through eighth grade. Students will use the lab to learn computer skills, complete class projects and produce a monthly newsletter with digital photography.

“GTECH is pleased to support the afterschool program with the donation of this computer lab,” said Robert Vincent, GTECH’s vice president of corporate communications.

“In an age where technology plays a virtual role in the education of young people in our society, we are proud to make this investment in their future.”

Since April 1999, GTECH has installed more than 100 computer centers in 22 states and the District of Colombia. The computer labs provide meaningful activities for children who would otherwise come home to an empty house. It is during these critical afterschool hours that most juvenile crimes are committed and that children are more likely to be the victim of a violent crime.

The so-called digital divide is a major problem for minority and low-income families. According to a 2002 report from the Commerce Department, households with incomes of $75,000 and above are nearly three times as likely to be Internet users than households at the lowest income levels.
