A car that once belonged to Pope Benedict XVI remains unsold after spending two years on an online auction site.

The BBC reports that eBay closed the auction Saturday for the 1999 gray Volkswagon Golf.

The Golden Palace casino, an online casino, reportedly paid about $244,000 to the previous owner, a German who got it for just $13,500. Golden Palace said it was prepared to donate 40 percent of the proceeds it made off the car to charity.

EBay, based in San Jose, Calif., said it had verified that Pope Benedict XVI did own the car before he became pontiff.
