Inland Revenue Unable to Find 100 Computers

MORE than 100 Inland Revenue computers have disappeared, but the department has now introduced software to reduce technology losses.

National MP Gerry Brownlee revealed 108 desktop and laptop computers had gone “walkabout” and wants assurances taxpayers’ personal information is not in jeopardy. “Inland Revenue is the trusted custodian of a vast amount of personal and private information,” he said.

If a company told Inland Revenue it could not provide information because it had lost a computer, it would get short shrift, Mr Brownlee said.

Revenue Minister Peter Dunne confirmed an audit last year could not locate 106 IRD desktop or laptop computers, 32 of which were obsolete.

The number of unaccounted for computers “is expected to reduce in the future due to the implementation of additional tracking software”.
