Brazil’s broadband Internet revenues rise from pay TV services

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 23 (Xinhua) — Brazilian broadband Internet revenues increased by 18 percent from pay-to-view TV services in 2006, according to a study released Monday.

There were 1,189,000 subscribers of broadband Internet connection provided by TV companies in 2006, up 89 percent from 629,000 subscribers in 2005, according to the study released by the Brazilian Association of Pay Television (ABTA) and the Union of Pay TV Companies.

Last year, pay-to-view television networks had gross revenues of 5.5 billion reals (2.7 billion U.S. dollars), with broadband Internet accounting for 11 percent of that figure.

Additionally, the sector employed 14 percent more people in 2006 than in the previous year. The study also showed that currently there are 10,952 people working in that market.

ABTA’s President Alexandre Annenberg said that the positive results could be explained by the economic stability experienced in the period, as well as by the offer of new services.
