TAIPEI, Taiwan, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola Inc. today announced commercial deployment of Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solutions on a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network in Asia Pacific for one of Taiwan's largest operators, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT). CHT will be able to offer easy one-push PoC services to any of its estimated eight million wireless subscribers.
The PoC service is a form of interactive voice messaging that innovatively combines walkie-talkie and cellular phone connectivity, allowing users to quickly connect with another person or an entire group of friends and contacts at the quick push of a button on PoC-enabled handsets.
This latest announcement firmly establishes Motorola as a leading provider of PoC solutions worldwide. With CHT, Motorola currently has 18 contracts with customers operating in 23 countries and territories worldwide to supply PoC infrastructure solutions for both CDMA2000 1X and GSM/GPRS networks. In addition, Motorola has several ongoing technical and commercial trials with leading operators in Asia Pacific.
Yee-Sing Hu, Managing Director of Chunghwa Telecom's Mobile Business Group said: "The launch of the PoC service will set a new benchmark in Taiwan's cellular history. This new PoC service will be relevant to the mobile lifestyles of Chunghwa Telecom's enterprise and consumer customers, who today are demanding innovative ways to communicate to one or many business associates and friends wirelessly. We have elected to go with Motorola for this landmark PoC introduction because of its track record of commercial deployments."
"We are honored to play a part in furthering Chunghwa Telecom's portfolio of wireless services with the launch of the PoC services," said Ruey Bin Kao, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola Greater China's Network Infrastructure. "The new services will help deliver a clear path for operators such as CHT to increase revenue and decrease customer churn."
As an end-to-end provider of PoC solutions, Motorola offers a broad portfolio of PoC handsets, device client software, PoC servers, as well as the installation, integration, network optimization and interoperability testing services support required to successfully deploy the PoC service. The Motorola PoC solution is in line with the Industry Consortium Phase 1 Pre- standards specification and can be upgraded to the OMA PoC standards which are expected to be ratified next year. Motorola's standards-based PoC client software is available for license to third party GSM/GPRS, UMTS and CDMA handset manufacturers and software developers. Motorola's PoC solution works with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 1X and WiFi networks.
