Luminous Networks Extends the Breadth of Its RPR Solutions With the E100 Packet Ring Access Platforms

Posted on: Wednesday, 6 October 2004, 06:00 CDT

Compact Economical Solutions Deliver Multi-Service Capability to the Network Edge

Luminous Networks(TM) unveiled today the PacketWave(TM) E100 Family of Packet Ring Access Platforms which enables service providers to offer true multi-service applications over Ethernet-based Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) while setting a new industry benchmark for price and performance.

Based on Luminous Networks' award-winning MPLS over Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology, the E100 Packet Ring Access Platform comes in two highly flexible models. The E110 supports a variety of Ethernet services providing four fixed 10/100BaseT user interface ports and an additional slot for either four additional 10/100BaseT ports or one Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port. The E150 supports legacy T1/E1 and Ethernet services with four fixed T1/E1 user interface ports and, software selectable, either four 10/100BaseT ports or one GbE port.

On the network side, both the E110 and E150 can be deployed in a Resilient Packet Ring (IEEE 802.17) topology supporting east and west facing 1 Gigabit ring interfaces, providing ring protection in less than 50ms. Alternatively, the E110 and E150 can be deployed in a linear topology for applications such as Multiple Tenant Unit (MTU).

"With PacketWave E100 family of products, service providers can offer new, revenue-producing voice and data services differentiated by Class-of-Service models and, at the same time, deliver as much as to 5 to 10 times more customer bandwidth over their existing networks." Stark continued to say that "early adopters such as large cable operators in the US and telecom carriers in Asia and Europe have already realized the benefits of Luminous RPR/MPLS-based solutions while using our platforms as the springboard for delivering a variety of services such as video, broadband internet access, TDM voice and/or VoIP services. The E100 product family now extends these benefits to service providers' small and medium enterprise customers requiring multiple carrier-grade services."

According to Bob Collmus, Scientific Atlanta Director of Product Management, "As service providers of all types move toward offering information, communications, and entertainment services to their customers, this new Luminous Networks product family fills a void that was previously unaddressed; a flexible optical access solution that delivers voice, video and data to customers that can't be easily served with today's access network bandwidth constraints and existing technologies."

The E110 and E150 are interoperable with PacketWave M-Series, C-Series and other E-Series platforms that scale from the customer edge to the metro core, supporting up to 254 nodes per ring. All PacketWave platforms can be configured, provisioned and managed from a single Luminous Management System.

Availability

The PacketWave E110 is available immediately and is list priced under $6,000US. The PacketWave E150 is available immediately and is list priced under $7,000US.
