The U.S. Department of Defense is set to block its computers from accessing Web sites such as MySpace and YouTube to improve network efficiency.
By blocking such online sites on all of its computers around the globe, the Department of Defense will effectively cut U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq off from the Internet locales, Stars and Stripes reported Monday.
Strategic Command spokeswoman Julie Ziegenhorn said the action was taken to limit the drain on the department's computers.
We're not passing any judgment on these sites, we're just saying you shouldn't be accessing them at work, she said This is a bandwidth and network management issue. We've got to have the networks open to do our mission.
She added that other Web sites may be added to the banned list if they are judged to be problematic.
Stars and Stripes said that the ban was to go into effect Monday when the official government policy is released.
