NexTone SBC and Camiant Policy Server Facilitate Policy-Based Control of SIP VoIP Services in Cable Networks

Posted on: Monday, 21 May 2007, 09:00 CDT

NexTone®, a leader in session border controllers and scalable session management solutions for VoIP, multimedia, and IMS network interconnects, announced today support of the IMS 3GPP™ Release 7 and PacketCable™ Multimedia (PCMM) 2.0 architecture-defined Rx interface to external Policy Control and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) entities. NexTone's real-time knowledge of the state of the session enables Camiant to apply appropriate policies on a subscriber's traffic. NexTone now provides the first Session Border Controller (SBC) to interconnect with Camiant on the DIAMETER-based Rx interface to deliver a breakthrough approach to controlled service delivery.

Editor's Note: For more information on how NexTone's SBC enables policy management via the PacketCable 2.0 DIAMETER Rx Interface, see release titled, "NexTone Rolls out PacketCable DIAMETER Rx Interface, Multi-stage DOS Protection, and New High-performance Media Card," also announced today.

NexTone's SBC separates the signaling flow from the media stream in accordance with IMS 3GPP specifications, giving service providers the flexibility to impose policy-based control on the media stream independent of the signaling flow. The standards-defined Rx interface allows for the exchange of flow-based information between the NexTone SBC and the PCRF. Service providers using NexTone's SBC can now exercise this DIAMETER-based Rx interface to external policy servers or PCRFs to control each session's Quality of Service (QoS) and network resource allocation.

DOCSIS®-based Cable Multi-Service Operators (MSOs) benefit particularly from this approach because delivery of QoS-backed VoIP services requires session-layer intelligence for access bandwidth and resource management. NexTone and Camiant have been selected by a leading US-based cable operator to support its subscribers' VoIP QoS requirements. In choosing this complementary and comprehensive solution, the operator has ensured that its network is poised to deliver multiple new session-based services. Each service's bandwidth and quality requirements are handled uniquely based on the session's parameters. This network service evolution is in-line with IMS principles and demonstrates how the NexTone solution allows service providers to future-proof their networks as they grow their service portfolios to include rich media offerings such as video and IPTV.
