FIVE THINGS: About Decorating a Cubicle
By Detroit Free Press
May 21–When Google opened its Ann Arbor offices to the public Thursday, it unveiled a colorful playground of cubicles that featured Potato Heads, plastic superhero dolls, Elmos and hammocks. Some cubicles were surrounded by signs of Michigan’s four distinct seasons. Umbrellas and wading pools surrounded the area. “It makes the office fun,” said Google facilities manager and decor committee member Tracy Weaver. She talked to the Free Press about the ins and outs of cubicle decor.
Safety first
Make sure you obey safety guidelines. Don’t cover up sprinklers or use things that easily can catch on fire.
keep your coworkers in mind
Keep it politically correct. Be sure you don’t display things that could offend others’ cultures, religions or political beliefs.
Don’t overdo it
Balance professionalism with fun. It’s all fine and good to have G.I. Joes and Tonka trucks lying about but not if they’re so distracting you can’t get your work done.
Adding candy is a winner
Coordinate with your cube mates on how they would like their workspaces to look. Have a decorating competition. Make it welcoming. Candy dishes tend make workspaces approachable.
Make it look like home
Pick something personal — pictures of your mate, children, pets or friends — something that inspires, relaxes or makes your place homey.
