Sumitomo Electric Networks Builds 100 Mbps Fiber-Fast Broadband Equipment Using Ikanos' Chipsets

Posted on: Monday, 18 October 2004, 06:00 CDT

Ikanos' Fx and FxS Chipsets Help Sumitomo's Carrier Customers Deliver Triple-Play Services

Ikanos Communications announced today that Sumitomo Electric Networks (SEN) is using Ikanos' 100 Mbps programmable Fx(TM) and FxS(TM) chipsets to build a new range of carrier products for delivery of fiber-fast broadband services to the home. Ikanos is a leading developer and provider of highly programmable semiconductor chipsets that enable fiber-fast broadband connections over carriers' existing telephone copper lines.

Sumitomo Electric Networks, a leading vendor of equipment in Japan, has been using Ikanos' chipsets since 2002 in Central Office (CO) and Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) products for 50 Mbps downstream and 30 Mbps upstream services and 70 Mbps downstream and 30 Mbps upstream services. Using the Fx and FxS chipsets, Sumitomo Electric Networks' VDSL CO and CPE products will now support speeds of up to 100 Mbps downstream and 50 Mbps upstream.

"Carriers want to meet the growing consumer demand for fiber-fast bandwidth without incurring the high costs of trenching or enduring the time to install fiber, especially in existing MDU and MTU space," said Yoshikazu Nishiwaki, senior general manager of business development, Sumitomo Electric Networks. "With Ikanos' programmable chipsets, Sumitomo Electric Networks has developed products that facilitate carriers in delivering 100 Mbps over copper. This fiber-fast speed will let carriers cost-effectively deploy FTTH in MDU for the delivery of popular broadband applications such as the triple play of voice, data, and video."

"Quality is paramount for Japanese equipment vendors such as Sumitomo," said Rajesh Vashist, president and CEO of Ikanos Communications. "We have worked closely with them over the years to develop chipsets that meet its strict criteria. We believe our continued relationship with Sumitomo and its inclusion of our chipsets in its equipment speaks highly of our product; we're delighted to continue our relationship."

Complete Family of Fiber-Fast Ikanos Products
